AUSTIN (KXAN) - An Austin pioneer in journalism, politics and the
feminist movement - has died at the age of 89.

Liz Carpenter was a woman who wore many hats during her lifetime - and
she is being fondly remembered tonight for her fighting spirit - and
sense of humor.

A native of Salado, Elizabeth Carpenter began her career in 1942 as a
reporter at the Austin American Statesman.

She parlayed her connections to become an Executive Assistant to Vice
President Lyndon Johnson. She was in Dallas the day president Kennedy
was assassinated - and crafted the words Johnson used on his return to
Washington.

Carpenter became the first professional woman to become Press
Secretary to a First Lady - her friend Lady Bird Johnson.

After leaving the white house she began a career as an author and
public relations specialist.

She pursued her lifelong quest for women's rights, becoming a co-
founder of the National Women's Political Caucus.

Carpenter entered a health care facility earlier this year.

agreed--a real class act and a first-rate journalist. Back when I was
a youngster, in DC, the press corps would always pay homage to these
ladies: Liz Carpenter, the sorely missed Molly Ivins, and Mrs. Sarah
McClendon who ran her own news service. Helen Thomas is about the only
one left.

God I feel so old.

Same here. We're rapidly becoming the oldest generation ;)

I felt old last week, when I realized that the coffee cups I'd bought
in the late 1970s, were selling for $30-$80 each on eBay (each).
Then I felt really smart, when I found TEN of them. Half are already
gone.
I can buy six coffee mugs for what I sold one for, and have
more space.

So I feel old AND smart.

Sorry to hear it.

From the feminist humor book "Pulling Our Own Strings," ed. Mary Kay
Blakely (not verbatim):

Liz Carpenter wrote a book in 1971, "Ruffles and Flourishes," about
work in the White House.

Soon after, Arthur Schlesinger Jr. stopped Carpenter to make the
following comment, "I liked your book, Liz. Who wrote it for you?"

She replied brightly: "I'm glad you liked it, Arthur. Who read it to
you?"

See more about that one at the top:
