July 27 marked the anniversary of the cease fire of the Korean War. For
those of us with ancestors who served in the Ohio National Guard in the
Korean War, are veteran's records available and where would they be located?
If not available, when will they be released?
Thank you.

Familientag der Hoffmanns:

Einladung zum Familientag 2010 auf Schloss Höhnscheid
Liebe Hoffmann Verwandte!
Was ist gut, was gefällt euch vielleicht weniger gut in unserem derzeitigen Domizil?

Mõis on rajatud 19. sajandil (1817) Tallinnast pärit
kaupmehe P. J. "Papachen" Hoffmanni poolt, kes avas siin kaupluse.
Konkurentsi puudumise tõttu osutus äri edukaks. Mõisahoone ehitati ühekorruselise pika puumajana mis on
säilinud tänapäevani. Veel ehitas PJH mõisahoone kõrvale
väikese maja ametnikele. Aastal 1891 müüs "Papachen"
mõisa
oma pojale Georgile. Georg H. müüs Müüriku mõisa
eestlasele
Jaan Allikule, kes oli rikastunud kõrtsipidamisega.
Hoones, mis paiknes ametnikemajast tagapool
(ei ole säilinud), avati 1902. aastal Väike-Maarja tütarlastekool. Ametnikemajas avati hiljem
Väike-Maarja
esimene nelja voodikohaga haigla kus arstideks
olid
Hoffmannid. Tänapäeval on nii mõisa peahoone kui ka
ametnikemaja kasutusel korterelamutena
******************
Marienhof (later called Müüriku manor) was bought by
my ancestor, Johann Peter "Papachen" Hoffmann in 1817
and sold by JPHs son, Georg, in 1891.
JPH was a merchant from Tallinn
JPH opened a shop at Marienhof and as there was no
competition he became rich in no time .
A proper manor house was built- a long wooden building
that can be seen even to-day. Also, PJHs son erected
a small building for officials
In 1891, however, the place was sold by
"Papachens" son, Georg, to an Estonian called
Jaan Allik who had become wealthy on running a tavern.
In a building situated behind, the former
Väike -Maarja school for girls was opened in 1902.
In the building for officials
there was the first hospital in Väike-Maarja
with four beds
and a Hoffmann worked as a doctor at that hospital

From The Cork Examiner, 16 July 1864 -
FIRE IN WINTHROP-STREET.--About half-past three o'clock this morning
smoke was observed issuing from a house in Winthrop-street, which is
occupied during the day by Mr. Gentleman, wine merchant, but in
which no one resides. The alarm was given by passers-by, and shortly
after the fire was perceived, a body of police arrived on the ground,
who with the assistance of some civilians, succeeded in breaking open
the door of the house. It was found that the wine vaults were on fire,
and after several attempts the doors of the vaults were broken open,
and water which was procured from Mr. Sullivan's neighbouring spirit
stores was thrown on the fire. Mr. Ring and Mr. Walker shortly after
arrived and the hose from the neighbouring hydrant was brought to bear
on the fire, which did not spread beyond the vault in which it
originated. The origin of the fire remains unknown.

I was sent this, this afternoon. I thought there might be people here
interested.
Jill
Hi,
The Keeper of the Scotland has proposed changes to existing legislation on
public sector record keeping. A consultation paper has now been issued and
is available at http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Consultations/Current. The
consultation period ends on the 4th of August.
I thought this might be of interest to you as someone who has an interest in
archives and recordkeeping. For those of you who are not UK residents, I am
not 100% sure whether or not anyone (i.e. a resident of any country) may
respond to consultations or whether it is for UK or Scottish citizens only.
I have consulted with a couple of senior archivists in other organisations.
They are not aware of any regulations stating otherwise and are of the
opinion that it wouldn't hurt to try if you feel strongly on the subject.
If you know of anyone else who might be interested in this please feel free
to pass it on.

Names: Cambre, Hill, James.
Transcribed from the 28 July 1812 edition of The Strabane Morning Post,
by permission of The British Library:
Winchester Assizes.
J. James, aged 19, was indicted for the wilful murder of his
mistress, Elizabeth Hill, at Shalfleet, near Yarmouth, Isle of Wight. It
appeared, that his master, to whom he was an apprentice as a shoemaker,
was gone with his son to church on the morning of Sunday the 21st of
June last, leaving his wife and this lad at home. On their return in
company with a neighbour, they discovered Mrs. Hill lying on the kitchen
floor, with three deep wounds inflicted with a hatchet on her head and
face, and her throat cut across. On interrogating the boy, who was
deliberately walking before the house, he very calmly confessed the foul
deed. He stood at the bar, during the whole of the trial, with his eyes
bent on the ground, in a kind of melancholy apathy. He viewed the
dreadful instruments, produced in Court, with unaltered aspect; he heard
the awful sentence with indifference, and retired without having uttered
a word, beyond a refusal to say any thing. He declared that he
entertains no sorrow for the action: for had any one else come in his
way, he should have done the same thing. His mistress, he says, was
always too good to him. He feels no terror at his approaching fate, but
expressed himself truly happy and content to die. When strongly
interrogated as to the probable motive of his conduct, he referred the
inquirers, without comment, to the 3d chapter of Job. He appears an
enthusiast of the Methodist persuasion. The Judge (Sir Alan Cambre)
commented with much feeling on the dangerous effects of vulgar and
literal conceptions of scriptural passages.
Execution.--Monday se'nnight about eight o'clock in the morning,
John James, convicted at the late Winchester Assizes, of the wilful
murder of Elizabeth Hill, at Shalfleet, in the Isle of Wight, was taken
from the county gaol, to the usual place of execution, and after
spending considerable time in devotion with the Ordinary of the prison,
was launhced [sic] into eternity.--After hanging the usual time, his
body was taken to the County Hospital for dissection. At the place of
execution, he maintained the same composure that has distinguished him
ever since he committed the act, and even at the last moment not the
smallest trace of fear or dread was discoverable in his countenance. It
does not appear that he was given to vicious habits, or like the
generality of the victims of justice, had become progressively wicked;
and, just before he left the prison declared that he had no motive
whatever for committing the dreadfut [sic] act, and could by no means
account for it.

by permission of The British Library:
Fearful Accident on the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway.--This forenoon
a lamentable accident occurred on the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, by
which a stoker was killed and an engine driver and several passengers
more or less injured. It appears that the 8.25 express train from
Glasgow, when about a mile and a half on this side [of] Greenhill
Junction, ran off the rails[,] crossed over those of the down side and
fell over the embankment, carrying the telegraphic wires along with it.
Only the barest account of the accident has yet reached town, but the
death of the stoker at least has been ascertained.--From Daily Bulletin.

No, the Hannah Clark(e) must be her, right age and born in Cromer. Just had a look at the census
record and another Hannah living with her aged 8.
The young Hannah is't im my tree yet but must be the daughter of Robert. They had 1 son and 9
daughters.... Strangely enough the next generation of Clarks, my maternal grandfather, Albert
Miles, and his wife also belonged to large families.

Transcribed from the 16 June 1846 edition of The Armagh Guardian
newspaper, by permission of The British Library:
A Fortunate Policeman.--Sergeant Brown, of the county constabulary,
who was recently stationed at Withington, has had the good fortune to be
presented with an ensigncy in the 76th regiment of foot. His father (now
deceased,) says the Manchester Courier, was for many years an active and
meritorious officer in her Majesty's service, in which he held rank as
captain, and he received a promise from the Duke of Wellington, shortly
before his decease, that if ever an opportunity occurred the interest
of his son should be cared for. Though some years have elapsed since the
promise was given, the circumstance was not forgotten by the
commander-in-chief, and when the new battalion of the 76th was raised a
short time ago, Mr. Brown was presented with an ensigncy.

Anne,
Thanks,
Fairly sure that is Samuel with the wrong age. The 1881 census has
him as 63 and Hannah as 58, the 1871 census has him as 53 and her as 48 before they
moved to the NE from Wales.
There is a Hannah Clark who died in Easington in 1889, but it is
unlikely that if she predeceased Samuel she would have moved out
before his death.. Not in those days anyway. Of course they both
may have gone to live with one of the sons, as Easington is a coal
mining area, and Samuel may have come back when she died.
Did a little more digging and the place names I have amended
slightly. Samuel was born in Alby, which is in the parish of
Thwaite, near Cromer in Norfolk, and that also appears to be a good geographical
correlation.
Gradually building up the picture..
Regards Jeff

From Dublin Journal, 2 June 1823 -
Yesterday, Cornelius Croak and William Croak, were lodged
in gaol, by Mr. Furlong, for having brought fire in a
kettle to the house of Patrick Ahern, near Newcastle, with
the design of burning it, and having snapped a pistol at
Ahern with intent to murder him.

So that Charity would have been born in a different year to her
sisters?
Now there's a thought!

From The Irish Times, 12 March 1963 --
WHITE BOYS ACT CASE FAILS AT CORK
A PROSECUTION brought under the White Boys Act of
1786, stated to be the first prosecution of its kind to come
before an Irish court since the foundation of the State, came
before Judge Neylon at Cork Circuit Court yesterday. It failed.
Before the court were three men--Timothy Joseph
Mulcahy, 15 West view, Cobh, Co. Cork; his nephew,
Timothy Mulcahy, 2 Park lane, Cobh, and William
O'Donoghue, Harbour view, Cobh, and they were charged
with forcible entry, false imprisonment and forcible detainer,
the first and third counts being under Act 26 of George III,
cap. 24, section 24.
They were accused of taking forcible possession of a room
at 2 Park lane, Cobh, assaulting Frank Aherne, and
unlawfully imprisoning and detaining him for one hour against
his will on last August 29th.
"RENT THE VEILS"
Mr. Seán Collins (instructed by Mr. G. Y. Goldberg)
defending, in an objection to the indictment, said that it had
been impossible to find a prosecution under this Act since the
Act of Union and he accused the prosecution of having rent
the veils of antiquity to uncover this Act which conceived as
a punishment transportation to America. He suggested that
such a punishment was completely repugnant to the present
conception of the Irish Constitution.
Mr. Sean Brosnan (instructed by Mr. N. J. C. Dempsey,
State Solicitor), replied that the Act had been passed by an
all-Irish Parliament, was still on the Statute Book and was
perfectly good law. The prosecution also could have been
brought under and Act of Richard III, passed more than 300
years before 1786. Judge Deal said that Poynings Law had
re-enacted that statute.
ALLEGED THREAT
The State case was that a frail, inoffensive man, Frank
Aherne, had occupied a room at 2 Park lane, Cobh, for 10
years at a weekly rent of 2/-. Timothy Joseph Mulcahy
purchased the house and told Aherne: "We have
accommodation for you. You must leave here immediately or
we will kill you." Aherne became frightened. He broke a
window to attract outside attention and attempted to escape
but was prevented. Aherne's belongings were removed from
his room to another house, by a van which made several
trips. In its final trip, Aherne was locked into it and he was
transported to an old ruined house.
At the conclusion of the State evidence, the judge granted
a defence application for a direction to the jury to find the
accused men not guilty. In doing so, the judge said that
certain replies by Mr. Aherne had raised doubts and he
doubted that the Court of Criminal Appeal would uphold a
conviction if the jury so found.
The three men then were discharged.

I am seeking details of Rose Nolan / Nowlan born circa 1828 Drumgoff
Rathdrum Wicklow Ireland. She was the daughter of Stephen Nowlan and
Elizabeth Farrell. Her siblings were: Dora 1827 (McMahon), Mary 1830
(O’Neil), John 1832 James 1835 Andrew 1838, Catherine 1840, and
Stephen 1844.
The family came to Victoria, Australia and other than Rose &
Catherine, were all
living north of Hamilton near Coleraine and Digby. She was listed on
her father’s death certificates (1873) as being 44, so we believe that
she too may have been in Australia. I haven’t been able to find her
on shipping records but it is possible that like her sister Mary, she
may have been married in Ireland.
Assuming that Catherine and Rose stayed in Ireland, where would I look
for their marriage and death records?
Do you have Rose nee Nolan in your tree? Do you know any thing about
Catherine Nolan?

Transcribed from the 30 May 1840 edition of The Drogheda Conservative
Journal, by permission of The British Library:
Fatal Mistake.--A Gamekeeper Shot.--On Sunday night a most
melancholy occurrence happened at Roundhay, near Leeds, by which the
life of a fellow creature was sacrificed. Roundhay is a pleasant
village, about two miles from Leeds, and occupied almost exclusively by
gentlemen of large property, who, within the last few years, have built
many splendid mansions there, and during the last fortnight many of
these mansions have been beset with burglars who in one or two instances
have succeeded in their objects, thereby creating much fear and alarm to
others, who have been kept constantly on the watch. Amongst other
residents is William Nicholson Nicholson, Esq., a gentleman of large
wealth, and a magistrate of the West Riding of York; whose gamekeeper,
it appears, had been indulging in too much liquor, and, instead of going
about in his masters [sic] grounds, had set himself down upon the steps
in front of his master's house, falling asleep, and it is supposed had
accidentally jolted his head against the panel of the door. This jolting
or knocking attracted the attention of the family, and Mr. Nicholson and
his butler, first arming themselves with guns, came out to ascertain the
cause. On going round to the front door, they observed a man, to whom
Mr. Nicholson called out, and, receiving no answer, he discharged a
double barrelled gun at him, the contents of one of the barrels entering
his body. This man, who was taken for a robber, turned out to be Mr.
Nicholson's own gamekeeper, who, on receiving his master's shot, raised
his gun to attack the assailing party, supposing them to be either
robbers or poachers, and was just about to fire when he recognised the
butler, and of course desisted.--The poor fellow was afterwards conveyed
into the house, and medical assistance procured, but all the remedies
applied proved unavailing, as he died about three o'clock on Tuesday
morning, leaving a wife and four small children to lament their
irreparable loss. Mr. Nicholson was horror struck on finding out his
mistake, and has since been in a state of mind bordering on distraction.

Back in 2001, there was an SGB query about William Buchanan Greer from
Peter Phillips (Perth, Western Australia), pphilli@tpg.com.au, to
which I replied saying that I didn't see the name in Irish Family
Records (1976).
Today I received an email from someone saying that he had information
about William Buchanan Greer.
I tried to pass this on to the original poster, but my message
bounced. He seems to have stopped posting to SGB, at least from
pphilli@tpg.com.au, about 6 years ago.
If anyone knows him, do pass on the information in my second sentence
(above).
